If you’ve ever wondered why some jewellery stays golden for years while others tarnish after one beach day… the answer often comes down to the material. And when it comes to long-lasting, everyday-wearable pieces, gold-filled jewellery is the unsung hero.
Here’s everything you need to know, and why gold-filled is the material we use (and love) at Isle of Cora.
What Is Gold-Filled Jewellery? (And Why It’s Not the Same as Gold Plated)
Gold-filled jewellery is made by pressure-bonding thick layers of real gold to a base metal.
It’s not dipped, sprayed, or coated.
It’s mechanically bonded, which makes it 100x more durable than standard gold plating.
To be legally called gold-filled, a piece must contain 5% real gold by weight.
Gold plated? Usually 0.05% or less.
(Yes… that big of a difference.)
This extra-thick layer of real gold is what gives gold-filled its solid-gold appearance and impressive lifespan.
Why gold-filled lasts longer
Gold-filled jewellery lasts longer because it’s made with a much thicker layer of real gold that’s permanently pressure-bonded to the base metal, making it far more durable than plated pieces. This gives it a natural resistance to tarnishing and wear, even with daily exposure to water, sweat and everyday life. Unlike plated jewellery, the gold doesn’t rub off quickly, which means gold-filled stays shiny, strong, and beautiful for years with only minimal care.
